As we head into summer, our expeditions are gearing up to take a large number of young people into jungles and up mountains around the world. We have seen a real jump in the applications for positions on expedition over the past year, which is very gratifying as we have been working very hard to ensure that we are getting the message out to young people from all backgrounds, walks of life and countries that the Raleigh expedition is really worth doing. Birkbeck at the University of London has now approved a new and innovative qualification, developed in partnership with Raleigh. From the autumn it will be possible for individual VMs to apply to have their learning experience with Raleigh accredited by Birkbeck independently as a Postgraduate Certificate in International Field Leadership. This programme also offers progression routes on Diploma and Masters courses, in related topics. Read more
We are delighted to announce that 250 graduates from 2008, 2009 and 2010 have so far been selected for the Raleigh Graduate Bursary Award for volunteering overseas. Raleigh is match funding a grant from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to enable graduates from lower income families to join an expedition and enhance their employability skills. The graduates also fundraise to contribute one third. 122 of the selected graduates have now completed their ten week expedition and their tales of how their expedition experiences have helped them to secure jobs, internships and further study are extremely encouraging. Three months after the first group went on expedition, only 7% are unemployed. Read more
